Miss Bonsall Pageant applications being accepted
Applications are being accepted for the 2023 Miss Bonsall Pageant to be held 3 p.m. Sept. 17 at Faith Lutheran Church in Vista. Single girls, ages 13-28, living in Bonsall, Vista and Oceanside or Bonsall Unified School District students and alumni are eligible to enter. Court Members will be awarded prizes and gifts and become goodwill ambassadors for Bonsall and surrounding communities. The Miss Bonsall Pageant is a nonprofit community service organization, offering candidates more than 60 service opportunities during their year of service. Food center reopens for in-person visits
The Community Resource Center’s Food & Nutrition Center reopened for in-person shopping after modifications because of COVID-19. Safety protocols meant that although clients could still receive food, it was pre-selected, and staff/volunteers had limited ability to fill client preferences. The center provides food to food-insecure people including seniors, those who are homeless or facing homelessness, veterans and domestic violence survivors. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The center is at 650 2nd St. Call (760) 753-8300.
Monthly Bird Watch at botanic garden
The San Diego Botanic Garden hosts a bird walk 8 a.m. first Monday of the month led by birding specialists at the garden which is a birding hotspot to native birds, migrants and wintering guests. The next bird walk is June 6. Visit sdbgarden.org.

Assistance League recruiting volunteers
The Assistance League of Inland North County is recruiting volunteers to join in their mission to support local children and families. The nonprofit’s largest programs are Operation School Bell, which serves 100 schools in nine county school districts, and the McKinney-Vento Programs for homeless students in Vista, Escondido and Poway. The nonprofit also helps neighboring Assistance League chapters clothe children of military families at Camp Pendleton. A new program began this year with the state-subsidized child-care centers in Escondido called Growing Minds. Members work with children ages 3 to 5 with reading and other projects to prepare them for kindergarten. The group runs an all-volunteer thrift shop at 2068 E. “I Hate Hamlet” opens at Scripps Ranch Theatre
Scripps Ranch Theatre continues Season 42 with the comedy “I Hate Hamlet” by Paul Rudnick, directed by Phil Johnson. Community meetings on Oceanside’s General Plan
The City of Oceanside is in the process of updating its General Plan and holds two meetings open to the community. As part of its General Plan Update and through community input, Oceanside Planners developed a “Community Vision” which summarizes broad goals. These efforts will be discussed at the Planning Commission 6 p.m. Monday May 23 and City Council meeting 5 p.m. June 22 at 300 N. Coast Highway. City staff is recommending “Alternative B” as the preferred plan for the General Plan Update (GPU), since this alternative provides for a higher jobs-to-housing ratio and more growth in the industrial sector. Senior patrol volunteers sought
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Stations in Poway and 4S Ranch are looking for adults to join the Senior Volunteer Patrol. Duties include traffic control, patrolling neighborhoods in Poway and 4S Ranch, checking on homes of residents on vacation, and checking on the welfare of residents as part of the Sheriff’s Department’s “You Are Not Alone” program. Volunteers must be at least 50 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident who has applied for citizenship, and have a valid California driver’s license and car insurance. Volunteers must be of good moral character with no felony convictions and attend a two-week Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy. Volunteers typically work up to five hours a week. Call (858) 232-8000. Families Needed for Type 1 Diabetes Study
Families with adolescent children with Type 1 Diabetes are being sought for a study by Sharon Hamill, Ph.D. and her graduate student, Jessica Preciado from the Psychology Department at California State University San Marcos. This study is designed to explore Type 1 diabetes in adolescents aged 13-18 and how families manage the disease. Participants will complete a brief online survey at their convenience. All eligible participants who complete the survey will receive $5 (maximum of $15 per family). Study results will be made available upon request.
