No-Bake Oreo Bat Cookies – Just a Taste

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year when it comes to dreaming up fun and festive sweets, from the oh-so-creepy Halloween Hand Pies and Chocolate Spider Cupcakes to the spooktacular Witch Finger Pretzels and Candy Bark. No sweet is safe from being transformed into a Halloween dessert hit!

One iconic Halloween dessert previously missing from my lineup? No-Bake Oreo Bat Cookies. Double Stuf Oreos are the ultimate cookie canvas that quickly transforms into a creepy confection, and you never even have to turn on the oven. Dipping and decorating them is the perfect family-friendly activity while edible candy eyes (I love the bloodshot ones!) complete the treat.

How Do You Make Oreo Bat Cookies?

The most important tip to making Oreo bats is to use the Double Stuf variety of Oreos because their thicker cream filling provides the necessary space to tuck in the bat wings. To make those wings, you’ll be twisting Oreos apart and discarding the cream filling. Break those filling-less cookies in half and your bat wings are ready.

Dip the Oreos in melted chocolate chips or candy melts and then attach the candy eyes to the top and tuck the wings into the sides. Just like that, a classic cookie becomes a creepy dessert!

Best Way to Melt Chocolate

The simplest, easiest way to melt chocolate is to use your trusty friend: the microwave. No rocket science or fancy tools required. All chocolate varieties will become perfectly melty in the microwave (though white chocolate melts much more quickly, due to less cocoa solids) and the key is to go slowly. By microwaving in 30-second increments, you can properly temper the chocolate so that it’s a smooth and ready to dip.

If you’ve got more time on your hand, double-boiling will yield even smoother results. Place a heat-safe bowl over a sauce pot with boiling water (making sure the bottom of the bowl is wider than the sauce pot) and add your chocolate of choice to the bowl, stirring as it melts. The steam from the bowl will gently melt the chocolate and keep it from scorching.

What Can I Use Instead of Vegetable Oil for Melting Chocolate?

Coconut oil is also an amazing alternative to vegetable oil for when you are melting chocolate. It still allows the chocolate to melt smoothly and will also help harden the chocolate on the cookies once they’re dipped.

  • Carefully twist apart 6 of the Oreo cookies and discard the filling. Break each cookie in half to form a total of 24 wings.

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.

  • In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the melting wafers and vegetable oil. Microwave according to package directions. (If using chocolate chips, microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each increment, until smooth.)

  • Dip one side flat side of each of the remaining whole 12 Oreo cookies in the melted chocolate. (It’s important not to coat the cream center or you won’t be able to insert the wings.) Arrange the coated Oreo cookies on the baking sheet. While the chocolate is still wet, place two candy eyes on each of the Oreo cookies to form the bat eyes.

  • Once the coated cookies have completely set, insert two bat wings into the cream portion of each Oreo cookie then serve.
