The story of this worldwide organization began with David Wilkerson, a young pastor from Pennsylvania, who described his ministry in New York City in his 1963 book “The Cross and the Switchblade,” his work full time among gang members, and the beginnings of the Teen Challenge organization seeking to help those bound by addiction.

The members of the New Haven chapter will sing and give testimony at the July performance as they did last year, telling their individual stories of addiction and lifesaving change through Jesus Christ.

The church will present its Mission Moment July 24 on Adult & Teen Challenge, and a collection will be taken up during the 10 am service. ASAP!’s annual fundraising gala a success at Sherman Town Beach pavilion

On the evening of Saturday, June 4, guests walked through a magical corridor of sculptural vines and entered the tent at Frederick Gunn School to celebrate community with ASAP!.

As they reunited with friends and met new ones, guests were treated to a beautiful meal of local foods and an address by actor and arts advocate Tim Daly, who spoke about the vital importance of arts practices and creative expression in the development and ultimate success of future generations.

Sherman Players theater group to open ‘Stepping Out’

On Friday, July 1, The Sherman Players will open Richard Harris’s comedy STEPPING OUT as its second production of the 2022 mainstage season. The curtain goes up at 8:00 p.m. for a four weekend run.

STEPPING OUT is a rollicking comedy about the attempts of a misfit bunch to overcome their inhibitions and left feet in a low-rent dance studio. STEPPING OUT runs July 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There will be two 2 p.m. Sunday matinees on July 10 and 17. Tickets are $24 for adults and $12 for students. Students may see any performance for $12 if they carry a valid student ID.

Sherman Chamber Ensemble celebrating 40th anniversary

July 9 Tribute to Stephen Sondheim and Mendelssohn’s Octet

Founded in 1982 – 40 years ago – by cellist Eliot Bailen and his wife, flutist Susan Rotholz, the Sherman Chamber Ensemble is a fixture on the region’s cultural scene. The first concert of its 2022 Summer Season will take place on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the McGuire Auditorium on the campus of the Canterbury School on Aspetuck Avenue in New Milford.

Called BRAVO!, the concert will pay tribute to three seemingly unconnected themes: the music of former Roxbury resident, Stephen Sondheim, contemporary American composer, songwriter, and lyricist, who passed away late last year; Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-Flat Major, Op. 20 and to the Sherman Chamber Ensemble’s 40th Anniversary.

Special guests and Broadway veterans Marissa McGowan (Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods) and Michael Mendez (Chaplin) will present an assortment of Sondheim’s music and will be joined by pianist Sean Cameron, Bailen and Rotholz.

Also performing will be violinists Doori Na, Robin Zeh, Paul Woodiel, Jane Chung; violists Sarah

Adams and Kallie Sugatski and cellist Mark Shuman.

General Admission tickets are $40, and include an After Concert Anniversary Fête. Children ages 15 and under are admitted free. The event will be July 9 at 7 p.m. The T.J. Thompson Trio has been active since 2014 performing in various clubs and pits in musical theaters throughout Connecticut.

Winner of the IMEA Jazz Artist of the Year for their recent album Take Two: The Sound of Playing, this group plays a combination of originals along with the Soul, Blues, and Jazz of New Orleans, Memphis, and beyond.

Burnham Library in Bridgewater, exhibit by New Milford’s Dennis Stuart

The show’s subject matter is landscapes of the Housatonic Valley and Litchfield Hills. The oil paintings were completed plein air on location as well as in his studio from reference and sketches. Kent Memorial Library summer reading program

All adults are invited to read and fill out a bingo card(s) for a chance to win. How it works: adults (18 and older) can register at the Kent Memorial Library at the front desk. They will receive a bingo card, copies of which will be in a binder at the front desk, along with their registration form. In each square, there is a simple task to complete, related to reading, for example: read a book with a cover you like.

Each time they complete rows on the card, they can put a raffle ticket in the jar. They can complete as many bingo cards as they like. The raffle ticket jar and gift baskets will be at the front desk and the basket will be on display on the DVD shelf.

The baskets will be filled with local gourmet/cooking produce and gift certificates from local businesses including trail mix, nature books, etc. – all related to Kent and the outdoors. There will be three drawings and winning three baskets: Wednesdays, July 13, August 3, and August 22.

Nature Preserve Monitoring Blitz, A Unique Volunteer Experience

Did you know that SRA has nearly 30 preserves scattered throughout town? These preserves range from wetlands to mixed hardwood forest; some are old apple orchards while old growth forests and glacial boulder fields dominate others.

The one thing they all have in common is that SRA must walk their boundaries annually, monitoring the preserves for ecosystem health, signs of trespass, and presence of wildlife. This fall, we ask for your help.

Learn how to use your smartphone as a GPS, what to look for as you walk the preserves, and how to mark and record your findings.

Artist, art exhibit at Judy Black Park and Gardens in Washington

The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens will host Nicole Alger and her art exhibit, “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral.” Alger’s display will feature inspiring realist paintings on canvas, wood and other materials. The exhibit will be on view July 8 to Aug. 8.

Alger is a realist painter who trained for four years at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Since 2020, her still life and figurative work has been included in juried shows at Five Points Gallery in Torrington, twice at The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in WI., on Artsy.net with 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago, Ill. and the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Alger’s show at the park will include examples of her unique style and subjects. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. to welcome Alger and her exhibit.

Author Jade Miles at Gunn Memorial Library in Washington

Australian author Jade Miles believes that a slower, simpler life is key to creating a healthier home, environment and a healthier you. Her most recent book, “Futuresteading: Live like tomorrow matters: Practical skills, recipes and rituals for a simpler life details the principles of futuresteading and offers easy-to-understand information and hands-on ideas.”

Miles will be at the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington on July 12 at 6:30 p.m. to talk about her book and some of the practical skills you can implement at home.

The authors will have a conversation about Maum’s latest book, “The Year of the Horses.” Both authors will be at the library July 14 at 6:30 p.m. and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Maum’s memoir captures a woman’s journey out of depression and the horses that guide her, physically and emotionally, on a new path forward, a release said.

Art exhibit in Washington to feature abstract watercolor paintings

The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens welcomes Susan Harris and her art exhibit, “Life Patterns.”

Harris’s display will feature abstract watercolor paintings. The exhibit will be on view through July 5.

Minor Memorial Library in Roxbury to bring back summer concert series

The Minor Memorial Library in Roxbury is excited to bring back our Summer Concert Series on the library’s lawn, a release said.

The library’s second summer concert will be on Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. and will feature “Restless Mountain Band” and the third summer concert will be on Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. with the band “Roxbury Station.”

The movie screenings will be held at the park, at 1 Green Hill Road. There are four Friday evenings

New Milford: Gallery 25 and Creative Arts Studio to present “Wild and Domestic” show

Gallery 25 presents “Wild and Domestic” featuring interpretations of this title by member artists. The show includes fresh new paintings, photographs, fused glass, ceramics, jewelry and woodworks based on the theme. The show runs to July 17.

Music Lineup for Washington’s 2020 Music on the Green Series

Music on the Green will take place Friday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. through July 29 (except July 8) on the Washington Town Green.

The series will feature a variety of musical styles and genres. This year’s series is sponsored by Wright Electrical Company and is free to attend.

July 1 – Jerry Phelps: Pianist/vocalist performing Broadway tunes, pop, and R&B

July 15 – Kayla Barone: Vocalist with guitar accompaniment performing an indie pop set of originals and upbeat popular songs

July 22 – Kevin Vidou & Daniel Varghese: Acoustic/vocal duet performing original works and popular covers

July 29 – Ron Castonguay: A one-man-band performing smooth jazz; polished tracks featuring saxophone
